Seine Eltern kamen aus Finnland, in Kalifornien verlebt er seine Kindheit. Jetzt lebt und arbeitet Tin Man aka Johannes Auvinen in Wien, einer Stadt, die wohl dem Wesen der zehn Tracks seine letzten Platte “Perfume” sehr entgegenkommt.
Tin Man mag die Dynamik und die Atmosphäre früher House-Musik und etwas abstrakter, verkopfter Elektronik. Seinen Vorlieben folgend hat er eine Reihe von Tracks produziert, welche nicht zu knapp Anleihen bei einer Vielzahl von Einflüssen aus dem Spektrum der elektronischen Tanzmusik nehmen. Dabei gelingt ihm das Kunststück, dass das Ergebnis wie aus einem Guss wirkt, weder gekünstelt noch platt zusammengeklaut. So vereint die Musik Tin Mans beinahe das Unmögliche: Obwohl Tin Mans Musik frisch und innovativ rüberkommt, schafft er durch die stilistischen Anleihen in die Vergangenheit elektronischer Tanzmusik vertraut zu klingen. Dazu kommt ungekünstelter Gesang, der wirklich gar nichts von dem hat, was man normalerweise auf Chicago House oder jazziger Elektronik hört. Mit ihm schafft er es, diese Sammlung perfekt ausproduzierter Tracks zu etwas Besonderem zu machen, etwas, was mehr ist als die Summe seiner Teile.
Kann schon sein, dass einige von uns die einzelnen Bestandteile dieser Musik, bestimmte Soundeffekte, eingesetzte Synthesizer, bestimmte Rhythmen und Melodiebögen, schon mal irgendwo anders gehört haben. Aber die Magie dieser Platte besteht gerade darin, dass Tin Man mit den ganzen Bekannten etwas komplett Neues präsentiert. Herausgekommen ist ein Album, welches jede Aufmerksamkeit verdient – egal auf welche Spielart elektronischer Tanzmusik Ihr genau abfahrt.

With releases on ahead of the curve labels Sähkö and Cheap to his credit, this California born and raised Artist of Finnish decent now lives in and works out of Vienna, a city somehow very fitting, in character and spirit, to the essence and soul of the ten tracks that make up the new LP release „Perfume“, from Johannes Auvinen, aka Tin Man.
Clearly an artist who appreciates greatly the dynamic and feel of both early House Music, and inspired and sophisticated Electronica, he creates a series of grooves that deftly touch base on a myriad of influences from across the spectrum of Electronic Dance, and fuses them all together coherently and fluidly, without sounding derivative at all.
At the same time as forging a fresh and innovative sound, Tin Man is able to infuse in his work a seductive feeling of familiarity, which only serves to enhance and accentuate the individuality of his style all the more. Add to this a very honest vocal style that has little or nothing to do with anything one would normally expect to hear atop a chicago house/jazz/electronica/acid fusion, and you have an Album that really deserves your attention, regardless of which of Electronics myriad styles appeal to you. Indeed the Vocals are maybe more than anything else, what elevates this set of expertly produced tracks to something much greater than the sum total of its parts.
In a way we’ve heard it all before, but Tin Mans magic is in the very fact that the end result as presented on „Perfume“ really does take the listener somewhere all these familiar sounds never did before. That’s no small achievement, and one of many that are apparent in this release!
