As someone who was way more impressed with the handful of truly innovative grime and later dubstep producers in the early to mid 00ies , than 95% of what has and is being championed today under those monikers, I am very happy to see this collection of stand out tunes by a stand out producer nicely packaged together and made available for a wider audience. All is not lost ! sometimes you have to take a step back to be truly able to step forward …
Terror Danjahs own label Aftershock, which he started in east London in 2003, was in my opinion one of those labels that you could buy every release blind, without listening to it. I did, and I have no regrets at all. alongside black ops, horsepower productions and wiley , Terror Danjah was ( and is ) in my opinion, someone exceptional who was/is really going their own way and in so doing creating a new musical landscape for all of us.
With the release of these trax from one of the truly essential labels of the last several years we have a chance to experience the musical innovation and originality that was the perfect emerging new sound in the background, as technos heavily oversubscribed to and unsustainable reality was being mercilessly reduced to the max, if you will. And at a time when dubstep is dangerously close to spreading itself creatively way to thin, stretched out like its predecessors between the supposed polar opposites of darkness and coffee table compatibility, this collection of beats and bravely forged fusions could help to keep the spirit of change and adventure alive in the studios and on the dance floors of the up and coming next generation of players .bring em on !
At the very least its an excellent set of trax from one of grimes finest, that deserves to be heard by a lot more people than may already have heard them . the artists name is Terror Danjah, this essential 18 track retrospective of his earlier work, is called Gremlins, and it may well be just enough to tide us over until the new Horsepower Productions LP arrives in spring/summer 2010 to set the record straight . Pretenders stand aside, for as Dobie Grey sung In the soul classic “the in crowd” , “other guys imitate us, but the original is still the greatest” ! Terror Danjah is an original and I for one am all the better for it ! (Text: ED2000)
